Olly Bryant Wins The Spa 6 Hours ! – Spa Francorchamps – 2nd October 2021

Olly Bryant and James Cottingham endured 6 hours of gruelling racing to finally win the Spa 6 hours sharing the Bryant 1965 Ford GT40. United for the 5th attempt at the race, they started P4 after a stellar lap of 2m.41s set by Olly on Friday evening. As others went back out to improve, Olly & James decided to save the car and focus on the race. This proved to be the right call, as just minutes into the race, several of the 86 car grid started to suffer mechanical issues. Just 25 minutes into the race, bad luck struck the Bryant car, with 4th gear stripping its teeth. Olly managed to drive around by avoiding 4th gear for the rest of his 2 hour 25 minute stint. At the stop, Olly briefed James of the issue and he went on his way, taking on the maximum 100 litres fuel fill and then executing a tidy stint with no mistakes. James pitted during a lengthy safety car period to add more fuel as the steady pace as a result of nursing the car was doing wonders for the car’s fuel economy. As another safety car period was called with just over 2 hours to go, Olly climbed aboard for the final stint and continued to maintain the gap around 110 seconds to the second place GT40 of Tony Wood and Miles Griffiths. With under an hour to go, the 2nd place car suffered an accident as rain began to fall, so Olly just had to tick off the laps and take the chequered flag. After 6 hours of racing, the blue and white machine crossed the finish line to the elation of the team. After the podium celebrations, the gearbox seized completely!

That’s where the luck ended for the weekend as Olly was unable to convert another fine Spa pole position in the Lola T70 into a win as the battery died in the wet Sunday race- that’s Motor Racing!
