Spa Class Win for Bryant & Smith in Sixties Endurance - 13th May 2023

Tuesday 30th May 2023

Reigning 2.0L Cup champions Olly Bryant and Andrew Smith returned to the Spa circuit to share Historika’s Porsche 904/6. A damp practice session saw the tiny Porsche set the 7th fastest time overall and first in class in the impressive 81 car field. Qualifying, saw the pair record the combined 3rd fastest overall time, again, first in class. The race was sadly interrupted with lengthy safety car periods which prevented either driving settling into a true rhythm. It also left the 2.0L engined car severely out-gunned at the numerous safety car restarts. After clean stints from both drivers, they finished 12th overall and 1st in the under 2.5L class. This is the first 2 hour race completed by the car, an all important step in the development of the 904. Olly also shared the family Cobra GPG 4C in the same race, sharing with his father Grahame, they finished off 9th on the road.

Olly also had the opportunity to drive a 1960 Aston Martin DB4GT lightweight with Kyle Tilley. One of just 6 factory lightweights, previously raced by Stirling Moss, it was a privilege to drive. Olly started race 1 from 2nd in class and got into the class lead before handing over to Kyle, who was driving the car on behalf of the owner Dwight Merriman, who was unable to attend the event. Unfortunately , despite the race being just 40 minutes (12 laps) in duration, the pairing were hit with an 120 second “elite” driver penalty. This rendered any chance of decent result, impossible, the car tumbled down the order to finish 16th overall when in contention for the class win. It is hoped that a more “fitting” pit stop time will be applied going forward to allow the highly original car to remain competitive in the field.
