Bryant and Smith Triumph in 2.0 Litre Cup at Spa - 22nd May 2022

Monday 23rd May 2022

Olly Bryant and Andrew Smith continued their run of form in the 2.0L Cup series by repeating the success of round 1 at Mugello with another dominant display.

Qualifying saw some confusion as the pair based their strategy on the grid positions being taking based on the average of the fastest lap times set by each driver, as had been the case at Mugello. Olly went first and on his first flying lap recorded the first ever sub-3 minute lap of the Spa Circuit in a 2 litre 911 with a stunning time of 2.59.9s before boxing to hand over to Andrew. Andrew then backed this up with a strong 3.01.2s on his first flying lap. On averages, this put the duo at the top of the timesheets. The timekeepers had an issue with the driver ID system and reverted to the usual format of setting the grid based on the fastest individual time, which was Andrew Jordan in Mark Sumpter’s no.77 Porsche, which recorded a 2.59.9s on the last lap of the session to eclipse Olly’s time by 0.064s to claim top spot.

At the race start, Andrew was engaged in an exciting battle, initially with Sumpter, then with Rory Butcher, David Verzijlbergen and George Gamble. After a few laps, Butcher found his way through so the order was Butcher, Smith, Verzijlbergen, Gamble, then Sumpter. Andrew ran until 55 minutes of race duration before pitting from the lead for Olly to resume for the final 35 minutes. Olly set about maintaining the gap to the charging Andrew Jordan who finished just 8 seconds behind after 90 minutes racing. The duo extend their championship lead with just 2 weeks until the next round at Dijon 4/5th of June. Thanks again to Historika for an excellent job preparing the car and supporting it at the event.
